Aye Rob!
:) Leaves Glasgow at 10.00hrs and returns at 20.15hrs
via - Greenock>Dunoon>Helensburgh>Rothesay>Tighnabruaich>Rothesay>Duniin>Greenock!
Sounds a very good idea indeed!
Can't wait.... :)

Might there be a wee a prize for guessing how many of the 'I love the QE2' Badges there will be present?!
Are there still 50 varieties of Scottish whisky in Waverley's Bar?
And mugs like Waverley's funnel?

I'd love to do this, depending on my future travel plans.  A full day on the Clyde would be perfect.  Is there a way to check if there will be anything significant shipwise in Greenock?  Regarding the 50 brands of whiskey, would we have to sample all?  ;D  Myles has given me some good tips for someone who knows embarrassing little about his national drink!

Crivvens, Ken - Scotch whisky does not have an E in it!!  Not sure how many varieties are in the bar nowadays, but I doubt it's 50, as the bar is not very big and storage can be a challenge.

We do, however, have 'funnel' mugs, as well as many other attractive designs.

Gavin is right, Saturday is not always the most comfortable/enjoyable day, other than the Rothesay-Tighnabruaich-Rothesay leg.  2nd July appears to be like any Friday - OAP day - so they shouldn't be too rowdy.

I'm not sure how many cross-border trips I can justify in the space of a few weeks.  I'll be up for the Western Isles long weekend at the end of May/beginning of June, and again for my timeshare week, 17-24 July inclusive - but I'll keep a lookout for definite gatherings, as the mini one we had last year was good  :)

Okay, first I had to look up "crivvens" and now I hang my head in shame for insulting my Scottish heritage.  :D I never paid attention to the difference in spellling but have put Myles' recommendations to good use and tried a good single malt over here for the first time!

Hi

I have just joined the forum this week and have been amazed at the enthusiasm of it's members for keeping the memory of the QE2 alive and the amount of information on the ship. I am really interested in the The Wavererly trip. Has the 26 June date been agreed? if so I will try to book as soon as possible.

Guys,

There will be 50 malts in the bar again this season - worry not!!

If I can make it on the 26th I'll board at Greenock - nearer the time would it be an idea to have a meeting place so we dont all wander around the ship passing each other all day?!

Just to say that I acknowledge what the Waverley regulars are saying that the Saturday will be potentially very rowdy/busy... but I think its still the best option given the route (passing John Browns and return to Glasgow) and that its the weekend (not everybody can take days off work!).  For those travelling a distance, they'll probably need to take the Friday off anyway to get to Glasgow on time.

If, however, anybody else wants to go on another date as well, and to try to round up some troops, so to speak, feel free to start a new topic about this.

The bridge might be a possibility (a few at a time and depending on which captain it is on the day), but I think the other two locations will be out, certainly for health and safety reasons.  The last time I was in the boiler room, I managed to burn myself, even though there was a lot less of me then, than there is currently!  There's really nothing to see there, anyway.

If I do get up for this, my normal embarkation point is also Greenock (it's easier access, cheaper parking and an extra couple of hours in bed!) - but she does go past John Brown's on Sundays as well.

I could also make yet another attempt for an Ailsa Craig trip on the Sunday, which is something that has evaded me all my life and will do again during my July visit - even when I was on the crew - for reasons of timining, weather or other 'logistics'

Hmmm, I think I feel another visit north coming on ...

Hi Folks,

Looking forward to this - with regards to visits to the machinery spaces / bridge.

I would suggest the lower ER is out of bounds now due to H&S issues - there are a lot of extremely hot moving parts down there and also restricted space. The Scottish Branch stopped these visit during our hospitality days as someone injured themselves (minor bump to head) despite being warned time and time again so it is considered by the branch to be too much of a risk however the Chief Eng may be OK with it. There is an amateur video tour of the Lower ER on the LCD TV in the Lower Bar.

The Upper ER (ie control platform) could be a goer as long as the groups are not too big but again this will be at the discretion of the Chief. The boiler room as Helen says, has not much to offer - just a couple of really large kettles!!

As for the bridge it would really depend on who is on that day.

For all those who have not yet decided here are a couple of shots to assist you in your decision!!

(1) We leave from here - Glasgow Science Centre
(2) Then we go "Full Ahead" (with a few stops)..........
(3) (4) To here - Tighnabruaich
(5) Via this channel - the famous narrows - Kyles of Bute

Hopefully the weather will be as kind as in the pictures!!!!

I think by the time we've met each other, had a chat, talked about the QE2, talked about the Waverley, had something to eat, had something to drink, looked at the scenery.... there'll be little time for anything 'behind the scenes'!
One of the nice things about the Waverley is that almost the entire ship is open to view anyway.  I'm never happier than when standing with a dram in the engine room watching the paddles go round behind me, and the engine powering away in front of me.

One thing we'll need to be sensitive to, i think, is wearing a Waverley badge next to our QE2 badge to show that we love Waverley too and not just QE2.  The QE2 was out of reach for most Glaswegians, and they also think she was even more expensive than she actually was... I'm sure they'd have been amazed to hear you could go on her for well under £1000.  Thats certainly the impression i got when onboard Waverley and Balmoral with my fellow Clydesiders to watch QE2 go by.

Where can I can buy a Waverley badge?  I checked the Waverley shop page on the web site but they do not have badges for sale.

I am just looking forward to watching the scenery, chatting to everyone and being on the Waverley again.  I would not like to say what age I was the last time I was onboard but I can say it was quite a long time ago.

I loved the photos posted by Gav and hopefully we get good weather for the day.

As definitely as I can commit to anything at the moment, I shall be there.  I have my 'Life Commodore' ticket, so no need to book ...

Nobody will be offended by the presence/absence of badging of any kind - it is quite usual for the regulars to be there sporting clothing, hats, badges, etc, from other vessels and from their other interests, transport or otherwise.  If you want badges, hats, T-shirts, sweatshirts, etc, these can be acquired on the day, colours and sizes permitting.

A lot of the movers, shakers and other regular PSPS members & passengers did actually make it aboard QE2, though for many of us - myself included - it was not until the 'eleventh hour'.  Apart from perhaps not realising what a bargain could be had, I guess it was down to thinking she would always be there and one would get round to it, sometime.  Certainly, if I'd done it sooner, I would have done it again - and again ...

Would people like me to try to arrange something for Friday evening too (a pub somewhere for an hour or two?) and also for Sunday lunchtime-ish (The Titan Crane?).  I make no guarantees that I'll be at both... but it might be good to have a location/time in mind for those who wish to gather before/after the waverley and before heading home ?

Mornin All,

Waverley leaves from Glasgow Science Centre - if you are staying in the City Centre you have a couple of options. Easiest is to get a taxi to the Crowne Plaza Hotel beside the SECC and walk across the Millenium Bridge and down the quayside to the ship. The ship departs Glasgow at 10am so best be in the Q at about 0940. As Waverley proceeds down river there is plenty of time to see the remaining Clyde shipyards (now owned by BAE Systems) and view the former yard of John Brown and the Titan Crane while enjoying a breakfast roll and a cup of coffee from the Dining Saloon. Greenock is the next stop - arrival is usually around 1130. A brief passage across to Helensburgh, then Dunoon, Rothesay. The ship will become quieter at this point for the beautiful sail up the east kyle thru the narrow buoyed channel and into the west kyle - arriving at the wee toon of Tighnabruaich at 1430 where you can have time ashore to walk the short distance into the village or stay on board and explore the vessel when she is quiet. All aboard for a 1540 departure and the return journey back to Glasgow re-visiting all the places we called at on the outward leg. Arrival back at Greenock is normally 1840 with Glasgow arrival at 2015 but sometimes this can be a bit later depending on passenger numbers or if a timetabled ferry service holds us out of Dunoon or Rothesay.

Dress code - whatever you like - it never gets like the Atlantic in a gale but can be breezy!

If you purchase your ticket on line then you'll have to print it but if for some reason you cant just take note of the reference number and quote it to the purser on board on the day!

Sorry for the War & Peace!!

Gav

We are planning to stay at the Crown Plaza if we can get booked.  We have stayed here couple of times and have always found it to be very comfortable.  Also because it is so near to the the Glasgow Science Centre it will be ideal for walking over to the Waverley on the Saturday.

Thanks for the info from me too Gav!

Very much looking forward to a day of seeing the sights and catching up with some fellow ship geeks for a wee QE2 Fans support group meeting.
Here's to beautiful weather, badges, photo opportunites and stories aplenty  ;D

Yes as well to possible Friday night / Sunday Glasgow based adventures - had a fab few years living there at Uni so glad of any excuse to return to my old stomping grounds  ;)

Folks,

I was talking to Waverley's Chief Engineer (Gordon Reid) yesterday about other bits and pieces and happened to mention our little get together in June.

Providing he is on that day he has said there is no problem with those us who are interested, visiting the control platform (Upper Engine Room) at a convenient point during our day. This area is the position from which the CE or 2nd Eng operate the mighty triple expansion steam engine and thus has a commanding view over this Greenock built masterpiece (I'm biased BTW!). Either Gordon or myself can give a short explanation of how she works etc.

I would suggest that the best time for this is on the return leg between Rothesay and Dunoon as some of us are getting off at Greenock so might miss it if it happened on the upriver leg to Glasgow (ie me!!) and the ship gets busier after Dunoon as well.

For those interested I may be able to get a walk thru the boiler room.

Hope this might be of interest to some.  :D

The Glasgow International Jazz Festival is on 18 to 27 June.  Plus there is also the West End Festival 12 to 27 June.  These two events may be the reason for the hotels being full.  I need to check some hotels and try to get booked otherwise we will be travelling through to Glasgow on the day.

I am now booked in at the Premier Inn at Greenock, which is currently on offer at £29 per room (twin, double, family), per night and can be booked online at www.premierinn.com.  Normal rate is £54 per room, so I suggest you go for it soon, if you want one or more at the offer price.  If you are young and/or fit and/or keen, it is within walking distance of Customhouse Quay, where Waverley calls, or a 2-minute drive there, where there is free parking.

Also not too far from the railway station, if you want to sail "doon the watter" in the morning, and/or back up at night.  From memory, I think there's a train about every 20 minutes.

I guess this means I am now a definite definite ;D

Hope this helps:

For info the trains are at xx.05, xx.25 and xx.35 from Glasgow Central to Greenock.  Destination is Gourock.

There are two stations in Greenock as well - Central and West.

Return trains are at xx.15, xx.32 and xx.45* from Central.  Frequency drops to approximately ½ hourly after the 19.54 until the 22.29 then the last one is at 23.29.

*A few minutes later after 17.54 inclusive.

Should we post a presss release so that the local press know that QE2 fans are in town?   Could be good press for the QE2 and help to keep her name in the limelight.   We would be easy to spot standing under the red umbrella with QE2 badges, T shirts, hats etc.

Hello,

I like the idea of the press release, good one Lynda, but if you all don't mind I'd like to take it forward myself?  I'll type something up and put it here later on and you can tell me what you think, how would that be?

I'm updating the roll call thread to allow us all to learn about each others.  I'll try to add photos too, as well as at least first names, if nobody minds, as this will help to recognise who we all are.

I will distribute stickers on the day for everybody so that we know who each other are.

I'm going to send personal messages to you all individually to ask about some other options for the weekend as this is the only way I can co-ordinate the responses.

- BusyRob!

A few things...

Thank you for the responses so far.

I think the 'sit down dinner on the way back up the clyde' is probably unworkable although it may depend on how busy the ship is (which depends on the weather!)

The Friday night get-together at the Crowne Plaza sounds workable - just trying to see what the numbers are.  Quite a lot of people won't be in Glasgow on the Friday night.

I've updated the roll-call to show where people are getting on - please let me know if i can edit your entry to be more accurate.

Sunday morning Titan visit - would need to be early - people have trains/flights booked in the afternoon.  If numbers make it worthwhile I can get a large taxi or minibus arranged for this, and will talk to the Titan people.

Press Release attached to this message, but we don't intend to distribute it until next week otherwise it will have become 'stale'.

Current Plans:-

Friday night - informal drinks together - Crowne Plaza Hotel bar (to be confirmed when I go there next week).

Saturday morning in Glasgow - 9am (eek!) meeting at Crowne Plaza then joining the queue together across the river at 9.30am.

Sunday morning - Trip to Titan crane (i will let them know we're coming) but this is going to have to be early (they open at 10am) because Myles, pat and Jerome all have trains/flights to catch in the afternoon.  We will also visit the QE2's slipway and toast our ship from there (and take more photos).

Reminder - Waverley is likely to be VERY busy.  I hope this doesn't spoil the day for everybody.  It will be much quieter after Rothesay, until we return to Rothesay - for the cruise through the Kyles to Tignabruigh.

I've spoken to the Titan crane and a group of us on Sunday morning is fine with them - they usually have no other guests at that time.  If there is more than 10 of us, we'll get it cheaper.  They can arrange a 'walking tour' for us, if we'd like, that will give us some personal commentary as we walk to the Titan (including past the QE2's slipway).

I'll message you all individually later about this.  I know that Pat & Jerome have a flight to catch in the afternoon.

The only alternative for the Titan was going to be the Friday evening, but not enough people can make that.

So the plan as it stands just now is :-

Friday - 1930 onwards - Informal drinks (location to be confirmed shortly).
Saturday - 0900 meeting outside Crowne Plaza for joining the Queue for the Waverley at 0930
Sunday - 1030 (tbc) pickup from Glasgow suggested - will check with you all about how we get there.  Might book large taxi/minibus.

This little piece of history sent to me by my friend Stuart Cameron is a gem in itself (even the music?!!), and also includes part of our forthcoming voyage aboard Waverley.

I couldn't make it open in full screen size, nor did I manage - so far - to set up a library for 'My Films' for this and the other little treasures on the site, which we might wish to save.  If anybody else works it out, please let me know!

Not long to go, now!  :)

'Keeping the QE2 legend alive'
by John Honeywell - Captain Greybeard of the Daily Mirror

While the attention of the cruise world is focussed on Norwegian Epic - I'm flying to join her in Rotterdam in the morning - one group of enthusiasts is determined that the once-great liner Queen Elizabeth 2 will not be forgotten.

Members of TheQE2Story.com internet forum are planning to sail to the Cunard legend's birthplace on the River Clyde next weekend, aboard the historic paddle steamer Waverley.

On Saturday they will be sailing "doon the watter" past the former John Brown shipyard, and on to Tignabruaich. On Sunday they are planning to pay homage at Clydebank's Titan crane, and they will raise a glass to the QE2 from the slipway on which her hull was built.

Members of the forum include former passengers, officers and crew, maritime historians and authors. Founder Rob Lightbody says: "The original purpose of the discussion forum was to keep the QE2's legendary story alive after she retired and disappeared from view. However, with the current uncertainty and confusion over the ship's future we also serve as a news and resource hub on the internet.

"Our members are from all over the world and some met on board the ship. Some have only met online since QE2 retired, and this will be a chance for us all to come together and share our memories and stories in person.

"Many people don't realise that plans for the ship's conversion into a hotel in Dubai are completely suspended. She is still intact - even her engines are running - but they are trying to find a new project for her somewhere in the world.

"We feel it is important to help get the word out that she is looking for a new home and has not been forgotten."

From the blog: "... and they will raise a glass to the QE2 from the slipway on which her hull was built."

Remember that the slipway currently displayed at John Brown's is not the slipway QE2 came down.  QE2's was a few meters to the West closer to the square platform out in the water.  If you look closely though you can make out the water entry slope.

See reply #91 here for photos - https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php/topic,37.60.html

In any case I would love to be there but unfortunatley can't.

Update

* Clydebank Post are running our story this week, and next!

* I have 2 'surprises' planned... although one isn't definite yet. :)

* Crowne Plaza, Friday night, 7.30pm onwards - tables booked in the bar - and the back wall of the bar/restaurant includes both QE2 and Waverley - see attached!!

* We have been offered a special complementary walking tour of Titan and Clydebank - however - I believe we will not have time for this.  If any of you are interested in an EXTENDED more thorough walking tour than the short one which I currently propose, then please let me know.

How are you?

'It' is next weekend!
Don't worry - we'll keep you posted :)
and hopefully your 'ears will be burning' as we'll be remembering absent friends!

Why on earth did I think it was last weekend - senior moment!  I was wondering why there weren't any photos posted!  My mind is still recovering from the Jimmy Buffett concert I went to last weekend I guess!

I didn't realise I was the only "Bankie" on the trip. I'll try and not let it go to my head!   8) ;D

Good to see that the press release is getting interest from the local press. I hope some of the national papers also show interest.

Post by: Isabelle Prondzynski on Jun 23, 2010, 02:49 PM
Sadly, I have had to admit that I shall not be able to join the Forum Meetup... and I shall be thinking of all of you, enjoying each other's company, indulging in wonderful memories of QE2 and having a super time on the Titan crane and steaming up the Clyde on Waverley.

Would anyone participating be prepared to start a Twitter account for the purpose, telling the rest of us what is happening and uploading photos as and when thing happen?

It would be such fun for us to participate indirectly in this way... and it has been done before :

https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php/topic,397.msg8153.html#msg8153

Once the account is created, several people could of course upload to it!   ;D

Oh thats a real shame Isabelle - I think we'll definitely be missing you (and your keen camera eyes recording the days events!)

I'm absolutely clueless regarding Twitter but think its a good plan - I wonder if it might be best to use the forum's Twitter account for anyone interested in keeping up with events?
Or else work out a system with camera phone pics via text or e-mail??
What about Facebook updates via the forum account?

** Regarding Facebook and other things - I think we need to find out people's thoughts regarding being 'tagged' in pictures from the Waverley trip - personally, I prefer NOT to be tagged with my real name in pics (work with children / not entirely convinced by FB privacy controls / would rather not have prying eyes able to see what I get up to in my free time!
Incognito Ali ... 8))

How about other people?
Might be good to give an opinion beforehand regarding using real names in any pictures / publicity etc

Apart from that, very much looking forward to meeting you all - the 'early birds' crew on Friday as well as everyone else embarking at the various 'ports of call' on the day  ;D

Thats a very valid point .Perhaps we should assume that its best if no one is tagged or perhaps if tagging is  a must then we use the online names?

Firstly - To Isabelle!
We will miss you - and as Ali says, your camera work too.
You will definitely not be forgotten. We'll be thinking of you. :)

To Ali - Good thinking about the tagging etc.

This is also for reasons to do with work.

Just a suggestion for Twitter, if anyone is going to be tweeting the day's events.

You could use a hashtag such as #QE2StoryForumMeetUp. So that anyone who clicks on the hashtag can see all tweets related to it.

Better late than never! I will be joining you on Saturday for the Waverley sail. Having found out what my login name was (its my age) I was about so sort out and post my plans when we had a 'Life on Mars' moment and were transported back to the 1970's. Or to put it an other way - the whole area had a power cut.
As usual there is far to much going on in the vintage transport world so Frank will be leaving Perth on a steam train and hopfully I will be boarding Waverley.
I will get my ticket booked on line now before we go off chaising Tornado over Shap in the morning.

See you soon Margaret

Nice to have you join us Margaret - I hope you're power cut free tonight and Waverley tickets have been reserved!

Don't worry about 'better late than never'....... it's a case of 'the more the merrier' I think!

If you're around in Glasgow over the weekend there's other things going on too if you'd be interested?
Friday night drinks and visit to John Brown's / Titan Crane on Sunday. (More information earlier in this thread ^^)

If Myles' 'I Heart QE2' badges aren't enough of a giveaway on the day; this is the rogues gallery passenger list as it stands at the moment.

Hi Marg,

Greetings from the other confused one - Maggie Maggot indeed!

Are you considering Ailsa Craig on Sunday, you could always dream that it was a Saturday afternoon trip on the Duchess of Montrose from Gourock. Talking of which have you seen the post from SC that Helen copied of the film showing the DofM travelling from Wemyss Bay to Inveraray, very much the feel of Coasts of Clyde.

Hope you have a good time following the Big Apple Green One.

Robert.

Looking forward to meeting you all at the weekend. I will hopefully make the Crowne Plazza on Friday but a business trip to London through the day may put paid to that idea!!

Anyway - Waverley is back on her home river to start her 2010 season. Hard to believe that the old girl has only missed one since 1947 - that was in 1974 when the PSPS were busy raising funds to put her back into service.
The shot below is from Gerry Deegan and shows Waverley making her turn off Garvel Point (required if she is facing upriver) with 466 on board on Tuesday evening's PSPS Scottish Branch annual charter. By the time we left Blairmore we had a total of 755 on board which is a record for our charter.

Hope this will whet your appetite for Saturday.

I like Avariel's idea of a Twitter Hashtag, but can i suggest a shorter one of simply #TheQE2Story ?  I will try to tweet when I can, and to use twitpic for the odd photo.

Regarding being tagged in Facebook - its very simple to dis-allow this - simply click on Account then Privacy Settings and look at what it says next to Photos and videos I'm tagged in - if you want to change it, simply click customise settings and do so.  You can similarly disable this feature on Flickr.

Very sorry you're not attending Isabelle - maybe next time and/or just come over for a more leisurely trip on Waverley some other time!

The Titan people themselves are going to do a wee something for us on Saturday - We all must watch the John Browns yard/slipway on Saturday as we go past!  They look forward to welcoming us on Sunday.

My surprises for Saturday have not worked out unfortunately :(

Regarding Sunday : I have visited the Titan today and spoken to Iain McGuinnes who runs Clydebuilt Walking Tours in Clydebank.  He has VERY generously offered to join us during our time there, and to do us a very condensed version of his tour tailored to us.  This will only take 20 or 30 minutes or so and we can do it after we;ve been up the Titan crane, and 'toasted' the ship.

Hire a small boat and do the toast from the foot of the actual slipway; you might be able to persuade an owner to do it for free in return for a bit of press coverage.

Peter what  a grand idea, my concern would be that we all get over excited, rock the boat and we all end up in the water, & l for one cant swim, Perhaps wet feet wasnt such  a bad idea after all...

Outstanding article, Rob or should I address you as Robert.

You have done a great thing, accomplished much for QE2 and have become as much a part of QE2's history as any other prominent figure such as you dad, Commodores William and Ronald Warwick, Sir Basil Smallpiece and Lord Aberconway.

Any word on a follow-up article to report on the event?

Thanks to Rob for all his hard work in the organising of this event...we take our hat off to you....

Friday - 1930 onwards - Informal drinks in Crowne Plaza
Saturday - 0900 meeting outside Crowne Plaza for joining the Queue for the Waverley at 0930
Sunday - 1030 (tbc) pickup from Glasgow suggested - will check with you all about how we get there.  Might book large taxi/minibus.

Anthony & Mary, Lynda & Tom, Alistair, Me, Ann & Etta, Rosie, Myles, Helen, Robert and Ali (13 people) gathered last night at Crowne Plaza hotel, overlooking a gleaming Waverley, for drinks.  A lively, fun time was had which defintiely captured the spirit of QE2.  Stories were shared and I think some of the deep-down enthusiasm, passion and emotion came through which is sometimes hidden on here.  We didn't leave until nearly 1am!

Hopefully today will be as much of a success!!

We've just returned from the Titan where 11 of us had a nice tour around the site, went up the Titan, met Gordon Bauwens, had a quick tour of some of Clydebank near the shipyard - we had photos taken with the banner "up top" and "down below"!

Yesterday's day included a champagne & chocolate "reception" on Tighnabruaich pier when we arrived, with photos taken with Waverley as a backdrop and a presentation to me which left a big lump in my throat!  Some of us then spent another evening in Crowne Plaza's lovely bar.

I will post more later including a list of generous people who I want to thank for their specific help - however Myles in particular went completely overboard with his time & money becoming, as Ali said, a brilliant magician with a suitcase full of surprises!

Well, what can I say. What a wonderful day on the Waverley, meeting everyone and having a good chat. It was really nice to meet "old" and new friends. Can't wait until the next time. Many many thanks to Rob for organising this, "you are a star" and by the way Myles, you are a star too.

Thoroughly enjoyed the events organised over the week-end.  Meeting everyone at the Crowne Plaza on Friday was more like a get together of friends who had known each other for a long time as everyone seemed to get on so well.  On Saturday the trip on the Waverley was just an amazing experience, not only for the sail down the water, but because we had the opportunity to meet the forum members who had not managed to come along to the Crowne Plaza on the Friday evening.  It was good having time to speak to everyone.  The trip was made special by the gift of souvenir coasters made especially for the occasion by "Waverley" and by the kindness of CunardQueen who made sure we had champagne to toast our favourite ship.  He also done a really good speech and presentation to Rob which reflected how much forum members appreciate his work.  Helen provided sustainance in the form of mini chocolate rolls - yummy.

The visit to the Titan Crane was most enjoyable and was the perfect way to finish the week-end at the birth place of QE2.

A very big thank-you to Rob for arranging this and for all his hard work on the forum.  I hope we have the opportunity to meet forum members again at a similar event.

The get together exceeded expectations!! It was a great weekend....meeting folks who had sailed on the QE2....we could talk for weeks on end and never run out of conversation....The first meet in the QUARTER DECK Bar at Crowne Plaza was a great starting point...in among the funnels!!

Thanks to Rob for his brilliant organisation and Myles of course for his large contribution of KLASSY Champagne for the toast ( sorry we missed the choccies as were oaf for more champers with a yachty friend).....and the LUCKY DIP was a hoot on the way back up the watter on the Waverely...  The speech Myles gave at Tighnabruaich  was really emotional as you were well aware.......sorry I cant help it if I cry easily!! .  The coaster gifts were very much appreciated from 'Waverely' and fit in nicely to our ever growing QE2 home collection! The Titan Visit  and Clydebank tour were also memorable....we will be talking about this one for a while I should think.......

Obviously QE2 is still casting her magic spell over us  all the way from Dubai.....she is unstoppable....thank you to our darling  QE2 for getting us altogether for  yet another wonderful  and memorable  voyage!   'hic'!!

What a brilliant weekend it was. I enjoyed meeting everyone and even my wee granddaughter had an awesome time. It's a shame I decided that we would bail out at Rothesay so I missed the celebrations at Tinnabruich.
A big thanks to Rob for organising the events this weekend.
The Waverley is magical and the weather contributed to making it a wonderful experience. Looking forward to the next one!
Once I find my camera I'll post some pictures.........

So lovely spending time with other QE2 clan members and creating some new memories on a beautiful old red funneled ship.

A fabulous weekend indeed & really hope we get to do it again very soon..... I just need a bit of sleep / recovery time to get over this one first!  :)

I am looking forward to seeing photos taken by other forum members and I will organise the photos taken by Tom and myself and post within the next few days.

But here are a few photos to whet your apetite of what a good time we had over the week-end.  The first is the presentation of the Golden badges to Rob ( a well deserved reward for the work he has done). The next two are photos taken at the Crowne Plaza on the Friday night.

Just left Lockerbie en route to Manchester via Inverness and had chance to sort though my photos of Saturday. As the internet isn't to good I will have to wait to be at home to up load them. They were a great reminder of a grand day's sailing on Waverley with a grand bunch of people. I am keeping some pictures for bribery purpuses at a later date.
Now having sailed the Clyde,  some of you for the first time on Waverley, or on QE2 can I point you the direction of a book called 'Colour on the Clyde'.
Many of you will know Bruce  Peter's book on QE2, one of the best ever written, well his graddad had a collection of photos of the ships that kept the Clyde alive. Bruce and his dad have compliled a book of the ships and form an interesting archive of the area. All profits are going to keep the Waverley sailing.
Once again thanks to Rob and Co for all they did. Yes Myles I've got your speach on on tape - now that is something to bring tears to my eyes.

Extended Thanks to :-

Myles - for paying for and getting banners made, bringing gifts for EVERYBODY, for paying for and bringing champagne and glasses for EVERYONE, for umpteen badges, for the presentation and gold badges to me - very touching indeed - as well as helping me with some behind the scenes stuff beforehand
Alistair for helping me beforehand with ideas etc., with the Clydebank Post etc. and for doing a car-lift today.
Robert (Waverley) for doing lovely coasters for everybody to remember the day with, as well as additional personalised and very touching gifts for the small handful of people who helped launch the forum last year.
Gavin for help & advice beforehand and for organising our engine room tours of Waverley with the Chief Engineer!  This was a lovely wee touch which we all really enjoyed!
Helen for chocolates for everybody at Tighabruaich (I can spell it now!) and advice and help before the event.
Lynda for doing the name-badges, which were great and helpful, in addition to the idea for, and help with, the press release beforehand and additional stuff.
Ali for buying me drinks and keeping me sane and stopping me doing daft things
John L - for various things including buying me coffees and taking/sharing excellent photos
Alan & Shona - you know what for!
Pat - for coming all the way from Paris, which allowed the event to be 'international'
Rosie - for various things including a lovely meal, a nice dram and as well as some on the spot career advice !
Etta - for the invite back to her hotel room!!

And everybody else who helped - there were lots of emails flying around behind the scenes before the event.

Additionally - on Sunday
Ian McGuinness and his guide from http://www.clydewalkingtours.co.uk/
Gordon Bauwens from GB Maritime Art
and Claire Quigley the photographer - www.alcluith.co.uk

If I've missed anyone out then I'm sorry!  It was a great weekend - I'll do a bit of a writeup in a day or two for those who weren't there (everybody feel free to do this too!) and in time I'll do a page and photos on the main website for the event.

I have just arrived home and would like to add to the gratitude already expressed so well.

Thank you everybody for a great weekend and special thanks to Rob, Miles and Robert (Waverley)  respectively for your hardwork, champagne and gifts.

It was lovely to meet you all.

I hope that in particular every body enjoyed their trip on the Waverley and can perhaps see why some of us are just a little bit sentimental about this slightly smaller (than QE2) piece of Clyde built engineering. In the absence of QE2 in Dubai I hope at least some of you will feel happy to share some of the love that you have for the QE2 with her somewhat smaller but considerably older cousin.

Hope we might meet again soon.

Robert.

Rob - One person missed out in this list of thanks - YOU!!!

Glad you all enjoyed your day on the Mighty Paddler - she is not anywhere near as opulent as QE2 but represents another corner of Clydebuilt - and of a byegone age of sailing Doon the Watter!

As I said to a few folks during the sail on Sat - reading forum posts and listening to people has given me a real sense of loss despite never being able to sail on QE2 personally.

So many of you went above and beyond to make Sat a great day so thanks to you all and apologies again for not being able to spend the whole sailing with you. Shelagh, was on with me so I had to divvy myself between the two!!

Lets all hope that QE2 finds a good home and that we all meet again!

Off to Dubai now.............

She tells me that a quality 10x8 photo of any of the shots is available for just £10 if anyone of us wish to have one.

The lift shot is still making me laugh, well that and Ann's wild hair in the gale force wind at the top of the Titan!!

Robert, the magic of the Waverley has already taken hold.  It made the day so special to be sailing on a paddle steamer that has become a part of maritime history.  The first time I was on the Waverley, in the 1950's my dad took me to see the engines and lifted me up to the window to see the paddles.  On Saturday I witnessed a Dad doing exactle the same which was a very nostalgic moment.  I have already told my daughter that a trip on the Waverley is something she must do and we are already planning our next trip.  Well done to the Waverley enthusiasts who have done so much work to restore this paddle steamer and to keep her sailing for future generations.

Hi everyone... sounds like you all  had a wonderful weekend of memories......am enjoying your pictures and it puts faces on names.... however... I'd like to know who the lady in the top Waverley picture beside Rob is.....she's wearing yellow sunglasses and a black T-shirt with bright coloured QE2 splashed across the front of it......she must have picked it up on board QE2 sometime in the mid 1990's because I have that very same T-shirt which I purchased in the logo shop on board QE2 in June of 1996 and I treasure it....

Many thanks to Rob for organising such a great get-together, to Myles for being a wonderful and generous master of ceremonies, to Robert M for his kind gift of commemorative coasters for all attendees, and to everybody for coming along and being a part of it all.  Glad that those of you who had not previously experienced the Waverley can now appreciate why we love her so much - as well as our beloved 'absent friend' and the reason we were all there in the first place.

Here is my own take of the Clyde meeting in 1990, which was depicted in Robert's coasters:

Amazing to see Robert Waverley's pictures again -- much larger than I had ever imagined! They would sell very well at auction, I am sure  ;D  !

In some respects it was us!!
These were originally drawn by 'Waverley, he was Chief Engineer on the QE2 World Cruise 2009

That bit of metal and polythene bag stuff wouldn't ever have held my weight ;)
and it still gives me that old wobbly feeling just to see it here!
To be truthful - I'm really grateful to you...this means now that I can begin a sentence with,
"Having seen through the bottom of Titan.....", just like everyone else who was so brave. :)
(The one regret is not having looked properly at the fitting out basin from above)

The Waverley image  - great paddling astern!

For all those not able to get to Waverley Weekend, this -  together with lots else, was all Rob's 'doing'!
He had cycled miles, and tied this to the railings exactly above the centre of the slipway used by QE2 at the time of her launch.
It's spotted here on the railings from PS Waverley

We could see from both the towpath, as well as from Titan just how tight the launch manoeuvres must have been
The image from the top of Titan is a bit 'bleary', taken through the window of the 'cable house' -
it's here to show the angles and size of the tug!

Much appreciated Cruise Princess - Thank you for posting these!

Thinking af artwork - did anyone manage by any chance to get a picture of the long wooden fence that leads directly from the slipway right up to the College buildings?
Rob pointed it out - the wooden slats have been marked clearly with the shape of ships, cranes and the yard buldings.
It's like a monochrome mural and particularly poignant.
There's one end of it below, with a link to the bigger picture here - it would be great to see more of the fence.

Thank so much, Myles
From Rob's explanation, it would seem that had it been 19th September 1967 when you took the photo, you would have been standing beneath the hull, about two thirds aft of the bow on the starboard side.

This wee image (BBC) is a good still shot - (the video clip isn't!)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/september/20/newsid_3075000/3075555.stm

How QE2 managed not to hit the far bank is still almost unbelievable.
The calculations, good use of tugs and chains must have been crucially important.
The video here is superb -now it seems even more significant!
Please - can anyone explain more about how her first journey down the wooden slipway etc would have been managed?
Thanks to ianamacl

It's easier now too, to understand more about the position, size and shape of the fitting out basin

A few photographs of the Waverley here from last Saturday.  Scroll down and click the photos for enlargements.  There is  a group of people at Tighnabruaich pier. Could be the forum group?

It does look like the forum group on the Tighnabruaich pier.  You can see Cruisemarsh's aunt who had on a red jacket and you can also see the forum banner if you zoom in on the photo.

If it's not the Forum Group, it must be a mirror image!
I agree with Lynda - well found, Waverley!

Is there anyone in the Clydebank area who has access to the Clydebank Press.  My friend from Clydebank sent me a text to say there was a photo of the forum group in the paper.

It's the Clydebank Post these days Lynda.
They have an online version (which I haven't looked at yet) and maybe the picture is there too.

Even though it makes me cringe with embarassment, as it did on the day, here is Rosie's video of Myles making his presentation both to QE2, us all on the forum, and me - the first bit of his lovely speech is chopped off, but it captures the lovely atmosphere.

Amazing!  I lived in CLydebank for 26 years and never got my picture in the local paper. That's the power of the QE2 Story forum!  ;D

My thanks to Lynda for posting the article and to everyone involved that weekend for making it so special. My grandaughter Ezri still talks about going on the big boat (Waverley)!

After the forum weekend I penned another QE2 poem...and resurrected the old poem posting but I don;t think anyone saw it...if not here it is again,.....I think she is happy the forum remember her!!!

Remembered

As you know I am QE2 out here in HOT Dubai
It's nearly 2 long years now since we said our last goodbye
Dubai don't tell me anything they've left me all alone
Is it any wonder I sit here all day and moan?

I've lost a lot of weight you know and I feel a bit depressed
The Dubai Docs don't hear me as I know I've lost my zest
I get so very hot and tearful they say it's just my age
It's just not like the old days and I get so filled up with rage

I always made the headlines wherever I sailed in
But now I sit here waiting for my new life to begin
I had so many promises they said retirement is SUCH fun
To be quite frank and honest it never has begun

I've just heard that on  'T'internet some guy keeps my soul alive
It's more than anyone has done for me since the day that I arrived
It makes me feel a wee bit better that some folks  remember me
So that maybe now or in a while someone can set me free

Now that this forum is up and running just for me
Mr Rob you'll never know  how my heart is filled with glee
It means I'm not forgotten out here in sticky hot Dubai
When folks read all about me again I can hear them cry

If only we had kept her in good old strong UK !
Of course I had already told them that's where I WANT to stay
But nobody listened I was cast aside
It was off to Dubai for me and my tears I couldn't hide

They had a big day out for me – this forum lot they said
I was so relieved you know cause most folks think I'm dead
They saw the river of my birth -- the place where I was born
Where I sailed down on launch day and I blew my big loud horn

They gave a little speech you know and a little toast
With luvly bubbly champers the kind I luv the  most
It's good to be remembered  I'm not forgotten yet
It feels just like my birthday and the party is all set

Now that you all got together -all for me I know
How about a special outing and to Dubai you go
If you could come and see me it would make my day
All your love and laughter would make my heartache go away

No one knows my future it's such a waiting game
But life for me as you all know can never be the same
So Rob and all you folks out there keep my life from failing
I want to live for ever – even though I can't be sailing

I've been reading all the postings on your forum thing u know
It makes me feel so good again my heart is all aglow
Thank God I'm not forgotten so here's a big hug and thanks to you
To all that still remember me..    here's  love from QE2.
