Title: Songs that make us think & dream of QE2
Post by: Rob Lightbody on Feb 15, 2009, 05:58 PM
Viva La Vida, Coldplay

The BBC used this for their amazing little tribute video that they showed live when she was departing Southampton for the last ever time, on the amazing but sad night of the 27th November 2008, and ever since, for me, its absolutely QE2's song.

"I used to Rule The World"

Rob,
If you had been to the concert in Liverpool Cathedral when we called there last year, a number of times during that cruise we heard "time to say Goodbye". A moving song indeed and to actually go  into the Mauretania Rest on the last night and be faced with the menu and those words staring us in the face, l dont know how Cunard could have been so cruel to us, but it was very sad.but so very well produced

They also sang New York New York, l doubt anybody had a dry eye during the concert, it was in everyway a funeral for QE2 :'( :'(
Prior to the actual service they had some great footage of QE2 during her years of service playing on a screen. The PR team at Cunard must be congratulated on the way they exploded our heart strings during that trip. Im not sure l can forgive them though :)

It sounds as if Liverpool really did do a proper Final Farewell to her.
By all accounts it sounded very moving.  :'(

The Cunard building was cleaned up specially!  ;)

Agree Rob, whenever I hear Viva La Vida I instantly think of QE2

We were having a banter in the Chat Room last night about songs that reminded us of QE2.
I'll 'fess up to having a 'QE2 memories' playlist on my iPod. An eclectic mix of:

- various rousing anthems / military marches (a la Sailaway)

- Sailors Hornpipe (having watched the odd few in Queens Room during Nautical Ball)

- Sailing (both Mr R Stewart and Band of HM Royal Marines versions)

- Leaving of Liverpool (Fare thee well to you my own true love, I am going far, far away...
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me, but my darling when I  think of thee.... )

- Time to say Goodbye (for obvious reasons... :'()

- Viva la Vida (only thing Chris Martin has EVER done that I will own)

- For those in peril on the sea (from occasions when Catholic guilt got the better of me and I attended mass in the theatre)

- Feliz Navidad (onboard Midnight Mass one Christmas)

- O Holy Night (^___^ see above)

- Waterloo & others   (gotta love a bit of Abba night haven't you?)

- Lots of versions of QE2 whistle downloaded / ripped from youtube (favourite is "Three Cheers for the QE2, hip, hip hooray etc. then 40 second blast from 40th anniversary voyage)

Am emotional rollercoaster when I put the playlist on shuffle and see what comes up!
Any else willing to confess? I bet I'm not the only weirdo out there...  :-[

Agree with your list Ali, and concerning Viva La Vida, well...was watching some rubbishy American teen soap last week with my young cousin and they played this at the start, started blubbing!!  Had to concoct an elaborate fib regarding an eyelash stuck in my eye etc etc as to why I was crying!!!   Ho hum :(

Have just played this at top volume on the office computer and am amazed at what volume it can be taken to!!

Yes, it brings back that awful awful final Southampton departure, only made bearable by messages and telephone calls flying while I watched the live webstream...

By the way ... it is Sunday night and I am alone in the office... I hope...  ;)

This song caught me out. I was at the Mayflower park watching the QE2 sail out, and i had been fine all evening then BBC played the montage of QE2 with Viva La Vida over the top and i started to cry. ever since it has been a trying song for me. I have since learnt this on piano so I can play it when and where ever.

Also I played TIME TO SAY GOODBYE on the QUEENS ROOM Piano on the last night of my cruise. That was quite emotional.

They sure did, and when the ships pennant was carried down the isle, anybody who wasnt by then already in tears, was afterwards.
It is unfortunate that the official DVD of the ceremony wasnt perhaps upto the high standard that we usually expect from Cunard, the placing of the cameras could have been better to provide clearer views of the singers, and it appears it was only sent out to those on the voyage at the time, and even then it was one per booking . None the less a nice souvenir of what was to be a very unique event.
Those that stayed onshore by the time l embarked the gangway down to the floating pier was  v e r y  steep, and perhaps had the evening been slightly warmer no doubt many more folks would have turned out.

Two more songs I have come to associate with QE2 :

"Seasons in the sun" -- the lyrics were so apt, and were used in this lovely tribute to QE2 as she left Stavanger for the last time :

http://www.shipexplorer.no/2007/foto/cruise/cunard/qe2/foto_cruise_cunard_qe2_farvell.htm

And amazingly, when we returned to Glasgow after waving her off for the last time on the Clyde, this is the very song they played on the bus...  :'(

And then, there was "Catch a falling star"... We caught this piece several times last September, out of the well hidden loudspeakers in the Midships Lobby (quite possibly for the benefit of the cleaning crew). Somehow, it matched our mood -- we knew that our moments on QE2 were few and precious, each of them like a falling star!

Otherwise, not really my type of music at all...  ;D

I don't agree , having just watched, the very personal dvd  from Margaret Gradwell  (web  greensidegran@hotmail.co.uk a 2hr dvd (with admittedly a lot of flaws, however, costing 1/4 the cost of the official Cunard dvd of the final Round Britain cruise I've got to suggest Justin Webb, ' Forever Autumn'  (cos your not here) from War Of The Worlds,I think it's inspired!, untill I saw this 1 clip of the dvd I agree with everybody else about Coldplay, I know this is a personal thing & I'm in a minority of 1 ,but hey were in a democracy...

Thought of another one, which reminds me of QE2 even though I don't hugely like it...

You're Beautiful, by James Blunt.  I believe QM2 played it across the water to QE2 in Southampton at one point, but I forget exactly which momentous historic occasion it was!

It was very clever for BBC to use Coldplay.  Such a good song, and appropriate for QE2.

I have a fundamental dislike of Rod Stewart.  Nothing makes me change radio stations faster than when he comes on.
Then one day, at the Liverpool Anglican Cathederal, the Band of the Scots Guards entered.
"Sailing" done on bugles and drums is just stunning, especially in tribute to QE2.   I couldn't believe a Rod Stewart number could give me a lump in my throat and moist eyes in a good way like it did that day.

"Sunshine on Leith" is a beautiful, sad, uplifting Scottish love song by The Proclaimers that I came to think of in terms of our Scottish ocean liner.

(I can't see the links above for imbedding the Youtube video into the message, but someone came along and did it ...    ;))

Anyway, songs or no songs, I think of QE2 all day, every day...

Kyle, the Welsh Guard rendition was so moving, with the drums in ascending volume and the trumpets that I completely forgot it was a Rod Stewart song :o  I totally agree with you.

Regarding a few songs I had on my iPod for the Final Farewell to the UK, here are a few from Enya that tug at my heart:

Orinoco Flow....sailaway time
Only Time....days between our next QE2 cruise, sadly never again.
On My Way Home....reminds me of Greenock arrival and I picked this song before I knew I was going on that trip
One by One...the lyrics get me..adios goodbye

I also got sappy and included a few by Frank Sinatra:

Something (Beatles cover)
My Way

I can't hear the Coldplay song without getting misty eyed.

I quite like the rousing New York, New York when we leave Manhatten, and we are sailing

On arrival in 1987 New York had planned a big welcome for us on QE2s  Maiden Voyage we had some American cheer leaders, somehow it didnt have the same effect as the Brass bands,  l was less than impressed with the skimpy skirts and bustle balls ::), or whatever it is you call them.
The brass bands when they used to play us as we departed Southampton were always very nice, one cruise they played Viva España as we set of on  Med cruise in 1988 straight into a force 9 gale and nearly ended up grounding off the Isle if Wight, by all accounts it was a close thing, and it made the QE2  onboard times !! Captain was the late Alan Bennell, probably one of QE2s best captains ever, who can forget the long queues at his receptions.

I don't really associate music with memories - I take a rather academic view of music - but one thing that does make me think of our QE2 is Holst's Jupiter - which was played on so many 2008 sailaways.

Whilst I still stand by Viva La Vida, a good choice it must be said Matthew (aka 'I vow to thee my Country'), for it is an excellent piece.  Btw, has anyone mentioned 'Aulg Lang Syne', which also seems appropriate (and was used during the final evening's reception prior to disembarkation in Dubai)?

I'm afraid that I really can't recall Viva La Vida - and have barely heard of Coldplay. Hence the tune is, for me, instantly forgettable. Pop music isn't my thing......

Hope nobody will feel in any way hurt if I add "God Save the Queen" to the list. Here's a little video of our Boston sailaway :

https://www.flickr.com/photos/prondis_in_kenya/3342065879/

Not sure when the crew started distributing Union Jacks to the passengers and playing "God Save the Queen" at QE2 sailaways (for me, the first time was in July 2008)...

... I very quickly worked out my own interpretation and happily joined in  ;D

Having just had the unexpected pleasure of 'QE2 The Last Voyage' coming on TV an hour ago, and therefore brightening my shift still further following the emptying of the Crystal Bar, I feel I must add to this list L'Enfant by Vangelis. A piece of music I have always loved, but seeing it used on this program with such stunning images of the ship for the second time has now welded the two together in my mind. Perfection. 8)

To me the song that i will always associate with the QE2 will be "Time to say goodbye" - it was performed on the last transatlantic crossing in one of the evening shows, but it really hit home when we went for dinner on the last evening. All week we had been given wonderful menus with a topic of the beautiful lady - the last one was a coloured photo of her sailing away with the title of "time to say goodbye" - that to me will always be the song which brings back the wonderful times and incredible memories of my time on board.

What a lovely piece that is - it brings back memories of the wonderful day spent at the Loften Islands last June - on the cruise up to Spitzbergen. If my memory is correct that was the last occasion the QE2 visited the Loften Islands - the sun shone and the mountains and Islands were wonderful - the finest cruise i have ever been on.

Nice one Avariel! Ive got the album too-had it ages. I've sometimes thought that Mikes second album Hergest Ridge (1974?) could be used as background music to film of The QE2 sailing serenely along. I recall Hergest Ridge (the name of a real hill in Herefordshire)was once shown on TV with footage of a glider  sweeping along the thermals gently and carefree just like a nice dreamy cruise on QE2.

Personally I've been associating that song with QE2 ever since I saw that video.

Sometime last year, I was randomly lurking in the kitchen looking for food to eat (PIG!) when I heard that song on the radio. I immediately froze and I stood there for some time listening to the song and thinking of QE2.

And Vida La Vida has come to be associated with QE2 as well, for me. Late last year, I was in the car with my sister and her boyfriend and we were on the way home after prawn fishing. The song came on radio. And I became very quiet and started thinking even more about QE2.

This sounds really silly but i thought about this. What song would you describe QE2's life. It could be any song as long as it fits in with QE2s career, life and retirement. It could also describe your love for her.

I have two here.

This majestic 15-16 minute tune always brings me back to QE2, to my first voyage on her, where I heard it being played in the center of The Lido off a CD player sitting on a table. All this as I waltzed around the ship, getting to know her. It also sounds like the perfect tune you would expect to have heard from the Bridge Cam channel in your stateroom.

As someone else also pointed out, Coldplay's Viva la Vida also makes me think of her, probably due to a YouTube video that was produced of her departure from So'ton last November.  The song gives me chills from time to time whenever I catch it.

I especially like this version of "Time to Say Goodbye", performed by Chris Botti and the Boston Pops.  I took the CD version of this out of the Library last weekend and when this song came on, it really affected me.  Perhaps it is because I used to play trumpet, but never that good, but the trumpet is haunting here.

Now, also on this same CD, is another song that instantly reminds me of QE2, "Under my Skin" originally by Frank Sinatra, but this version is especially nice.  I could have written this after my first time onboard and it brings back visions of wearing that tux on those magical nights on QE2.

This is a great song that reminds me of QE2. I cant find the original version without the female duet part.

But its Josh Groban singing OCEANO. Its best heard off a CD.

I originally heard this attached to a video about the Norway, a 60s liner that has been scrapped.

Caledonia by Dougie McLean.

I put some video of QE2 on the Clyde during her 2007 birthday round UK - felt right at the time and given what happened a year later - even more so!!

Can we post video to this forum? I've got it down to a reasonable file size!

You don't have to be mad to post on here, but it helps!
How about this for a bizarre song/ tune with aQE2 conection
When QE2 left the UK for the last time Cold Play’s Viva la Vida was the backing music and for many QE2 fans it brings a tear to the eye.
How strange that the only time I saw these buskers in Sydney they were playing that tune.
It mad but fun.

Well, it is the 'silly season'!

When QE2 left the UK the BBC used Cold Play Viva la Vida as the background music as she sailed away.
Anyone who heard it cannot be moved by it being played.
When I was wandering back to my hotel in Sydney a crazy group were busking and of all the tunes they were playing was Viva la Vida.
The QE2 is still on Google maps as you know in Sydney so it was ironic to hear the tune being played there.

Prepare for tears I've found the original BBC clip

The lyrics really do remind me of QE2 in how she has a heart and soul.

And also Enya

Around every corner the songs still hits the spot, Viva la Veda (I used to Rule the world) turns up in the strangest of places by the strangest of people - buskers in Sydney.

Also time to say 'good bye ' I heard it on a TV show the other day! it still has the same effect 2 years on.  The only time it went wrong was as we left the Tyne something went wrong with the sound sytem on the ship. Needless to say the backing track got changed on my dvd.

"Moonriver" always makes me think of QE2, as used in this video

http://www.vimeo.com/7682958
the lyrics
"...I'm crossing you in style some day.  Oh dreammaker, you heartbreaker, where ever you're going, I'm going your way.  Two drifters, off to see the world, there's such a lot of world to see... we're after the same rainbow's end..."
evoke perfectly the dreamy, blissful, nirvana of life on, and with, QE2.

"Classical Gas"
"Love is Blue"
and
"Aquarius"
as used in the awesome "Groove to the New QE2" video
always make me think of QE2, as they represent perfectly the world into which the QE2 was born.

all three of these tunes are on my Ipod, as is "Red Red Wine" by UB40.
"Red Red Wine" because on a perfect day a few years ago, returning to QE2 after an awesome day of snorkeling and swimming, on the catamaran on which we sailing the operators of the shore excursion were playing this album.  Being a bit high with rum punch, and a bit high because life was perfect, it just struck me as that song was playing that things could not possibly get any better.  Every time since then that I've heard Red Red Wine, I am brought back to that perfect day, made possible by QE2.

A day off work today, and I decided to revisit my Videos from that lovely dreamy summer holiday on the Med on QE2 in 2008.

While walking along boat deck with Ali, in the sunshine, to hear the midday whistle test, my random music player started playing James - We're Going to Miss you.

It has just become one of my QE2 Songs.

It even has one of Ali's phrases that she used in reference to QE2, "there are no words...."

Links elsewhere to some new video uploads later!

(If you've never heard it before give it 2 minutes before deciding whether you like it or not!).

Same band, different song for me Rob. James with their foot stomping anthem Sit Down.

"If I hadn't seen such riches,

I could live with being poor,"

Kinda sums it up for me

For me it has to be a song called 'Stay with me till dawn' by Judy Tzuke. It's from her first album which, interestingly enough is called 'Welcome to the Cruise'.

It always takes me back to a North Cape cruise in 1981, part of the midnight buffet was a barbecue on one of the after decks, it was broad daylight and a small group of us were sitting eating burgers outside at one o'clock in the morning. After that it was back to my cabin for a nightcap and listen to Judy Tzuke.

Happy days!

Thanks for the video Risky. Like you I haven't listened to that in years either.

A few days ago, when the song came back to mind I thought I would dig out the CD and have a listen. After half an hour of searching it dawned on me that I had never owned the CD as they weren't invented back then! I remembered that I had a copy on cassette. I had to stop myself from going off to look for it though as I realised that even if I did find it I have nothing to play a cassette on any more.

Oh well, such is progress :-\

Quite a few songs remind me of our QE2. Such as Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody: "Goodbye, I've got to go"

Or another song of Queen's reminds me of her in Dubai: "Oh how I want to break free"

And then of course Coldplay's Viva la Vida: "I used to rule the world"... "But that was when I ruled the world"

Dougie MacLean's "Caledonia" - used a royalty free version for a video I compiled of her after she left her river for the last time. Most of the footage was actually taken during her 2007 visit but the sentiment is the same.

Must try to get it onto YouTube or similar then link to here - see if you guys on here agree!!

Thank-you so much for reminding us about this really funny video, which was so apt on a day when we remember when she was launched and see how she looks today, in the recent video clips from Dubai.  Your post was just what we need to remember the good times.

I hope you do not mind that I have moved your post to this topic where the video was previously mentioned.

That song came back to me today, as this is the season of the Perseid Showers. Maybe we could all watch out for the falling stars, today and tomorrow, and still for a few days after that, making a wish for QE2 -- she needs it!

Hi Isabelle
'Funnily enough'
I was watching out for the Perseid Shower last night - Just one solitary star shooting at unbelievably fast speed across from NE to SW,  at midnight last night - and I was thinking exactly the same thing too!

Also - the night before last I dreamt of QE2 - an extremely rare event, and I can remember feeling absolutely delighted - our cabin had a big window as well as a porthole!! It was in the same deepish sort of 'apricot' colours as the cabin that Rob had taken a photo of on his last trip (3 Deck, I reckoned!). The carpets felt the same underfoot, it was all so comfortable - including the chairs along the covered promenade alongside the Queens Room - the only difficulty was trying to identify where our cabin was from outside - looking at the hull!
Good Luck with clear skies tonight!
Rosie.

PS - Just wondering whether some of the QE2 Crew members have dreams about QE2 too....!

(I'm fairly certain there is a Dreaming about QE2 Topic - I'm sorry as this probably belongs there too!)

In my younger days my Great Granny played the organ and her piece was Y Viva Espana, dont ask me why she played it, but play it she did, with gutso.

Fast forward to 6th October 1988. Im on the boat deck edging away from the berth, and crackling over the tannoy comes the same tune..and off we sailed to Spain, Ibiza, Cannes, Barcelona Gib and Lisbon.A 9 day cruise. We battled  storms that night leaving the berth, Nearly grounded on the IOW and the 2nd night l was out on deck late at night experiencing the unusual sensation of hot weather at night, next day we anchored in Ibiza and l went   ashore with an officer for a beer in for me what was extreme heat .It was for me a very special cruise ..and a long association with the Hotel Managers Table and all at 19 years old.
