Does anyone know which ship (if any) Capt McNaught has transferred to? There are postings on CC about other esteemed QE2 staff, but not him
-
He told us in September that he would be sharing QV with Nick Bates.
Both of these captains were excellent, and so likeable, on QE2 (and we knew Nick Bates also on Caronia)... but I fear I shall not book a voyage on QV... :(
-
I was also told that Captain McNaught will be aboard Queen Victoria.
Someone however will be needed to stand by Queen Elizabeth soon!
-
I don't think you've persuaded me, Chris ;) !
Even with Ian McNaught as captain, I doubt that I shall want to try out the sadly misnamed new QE...
-
The photos of QV in the waves on Rob's main site are enough to put me off, even with our esteemed Capt McNaught at the helm!
Interesting post on CC below:-
http://www.journallive.co.uk/north-east-news/todays-news/2009/02/11/qe2-captain-at-helm-of-tyne-clean-up-vessel-61634-22903828/
-
I heard he was due to join QV also, along with Thomas Quinones apparently. Have to agree with your point about doing a T/A on QV Hollihedge. The pictures, although not surprising, did little to inspire me and if/when I do cross the pond, it will be QM2 only I'm afraid!
-
I've bitten the bullet and am doing first TA (ever!) on QM2 April 8th -does feel as if I am being unfaithful to QE2 ???( but am thinking i need to try QM2 out whilst searching for a QE2 substitute....)
You never forget your first love..... the question is... am I ready to move on yet???? ???

You never forget your first love..... the question is... am I ready to move on yet?
Ali
Ali,
l wish you well, as for being unfaithful to dear QE2 ,rather you than me ;) l havent so much as even looked at the 2009 brochure, it really doesnt float my boat so to speak, but with the massive price cuts, perhaps i have picked the wrong year to stop cruising ::)
-
Ali, don't look at it as being unfaithful; after all, it's not like you're having an affair with QM2 behind QE2's back but rather that you're thinking of dating again after a suitable period of mourning. We all have to move on but we never forget those we have lost along the way!
-
-
Thanks for posting Chris
-
Thanks, Chris.
Possibly a silly question, but is Ian McNaught from Newcastle?
-
Possibly a silly question, but is Ian McNaught from Newcastle?
No such thing as a silly question Pia but close as Ian originates from Sunderland
-
Many thanks for posting this, not only do I see Captain McNaught for myself, I am more than pleased to see the Tyne River being refurbished and cleaned environmentally. A certain 4 stacker (now who was she) was born on this very river, and although I've never seen the Tyne for myself, I am interested in environmental matters.
-
Thanks, Andy :) Now I will go and look for a map of the U.K. ...
-
I agree with Andy. The QE2 was my first 'ship love' and will always be the best but there comes a time to move on. The way I see it, it stays in the family...I have promised the give the QM2 another chance after a very disappointing Maiden Eastbound Voyage. I will do the transat round trip June 13 - 25... Anyone else on board?
-

What a pity you're not on the May 2nd crossing.....

Matthew,
I do believe we've had this conversation elsewhere.....
I shall post my thoughts on Britannia lunchtime dining when I return to prepare you for your crossing!

A good read!
http://wearecunard.com/2009/05/queen-victoria’s-master-captain-ian-mcnaught/
-
It is indeed and what ship does he mention most often...
QM2 NO !!! not even a mention
Queen Victoria NO !!! only mentioned twice
Queen Elizabeth NO !!! one mention
QE2........ 6 times . YES QE2 [move] ;D ;D
-
Hooray!
Great Man - Greatest Ocean Liner EVER.
-
Excellent stuff, good on you Ian!
How to tell the QE2 fans that you still love the old girl, while not actually saying anything that will get you into trouble!
He must have learned HOW TO GO SLOW! I'm not just poking fun, it must actually make it a bit harder to keep to schedule when things happen than it did on QE2. Although admittedly it must also be fun to dock and undock without assistance after the straight-lines-only QE2!
-
Captain McNaught had a practice run of course, on the westbound tandem crossing with QV in January last year. It took 7 days and the midday announcements were, at times, very tounge in cheek laced with a hint of sarcasm
-
What do you think the guy second from the left had just noticed?!

Well, I know what the captain is thinking.......I miss QE2. :'( He just does not look the same to me and I have total empathy to his situation.
-
When Ian Mcnaught was First Officer i dealed closely with him at least once a week during the Special Muster Drills and i can say if someone had a passion for the QE2 that was him.Hes love and caring regarding of any safety issues of her was just amazing. He really did and still loves his Lady.
Louis
-
Rosie, I bet it's not something bearing down on him at 28+ knots, ( but he maybe wishes it was)... pete..
-
Richard Wagner of Beyondships.com interviewed Captain McNaught during the overnight stay in NYC back just before he ended up "loosing it" in that infamous interview.
http://beyondships.com/QV-McNaught-1.html
He personally mentioned QE2 nine times in the interview. You know he misses her dearly.
-
Thanks for that, it was a good read. Yea, you can tell where his heart really lives.
-
(more details below)
-
That's a real shame, I was looking forward to meeting him and sailing on board with him in the future.
Let's hope he is moving on to bigger and better things, although from what our members who have actually met him say NOTHING will be bigger and better than QE2.
john
-
I had the pleasure of meeting him on my Norwegian Fjords cruise in June 2008 and having my picture from the Captain's cocktail party and a few things from the captain's signing.
As well as a ships captain I thought he was brilliant with passengers and his sense of humour is great.
I wish him well in the future.
-
I never sailed with him, or met him, but everything to do with QE2's later years, and surrounding her final voyages, and the memories everybody has of these times, was enhanced by his presence on board, and his clear love, enjoyment and respect for QE2.
I wish him well for the future, whatever he's planning to do.
-
I had the pleasure of spending five or six hours on the bridge of QE2 chatting with Ian McNaught in February 2008 when QE2 was inbound to Melbourne. It was a great opportunity as my wife and I joined the ship two weeks later in Singapore for a three week trip to Los Angeles. It was during that time that she touched nearly 33 knots - there is a picture of the ship's CCTV showing that somewhere on this site I think.
I boarded the ship outside Port Phillip Heads on QE2's inbound passage on 29th February last year with the pilot. It was very rough outside the Heads and boarding the ship from the pilot cutter at 1.00 am was an adventure in itself. The captain was keen to enter Port Phillip Bay earlier than was really necessary as it was rough outside and preferred to proceed up the Bay at a slower speed to berth at 07.30.
We talked about what would happen when the ship reached Dubai in November that year as welll as Capt McNaught's views on the merits of the traditional liner vis-a-vis the cruise ship from a seaman's point of view. He was clearly very fond of QE2 and saw her withdrawal as the end of an era. You may be interested to know that the pilot had views about the ship's handling characteristics which weren't all that complimentary, having to do with her propellers being located so far forard of her rudder.
Capt McNaught pointed out some details of the ship's structure which were evidence of the ship's age and wear and tear - a point that needs to be taken into account by those optimistic enough to think she might ever trade again.
He was charming company, sharing many anecdotes and colourful stories about his experience in his ship.
I was very touched when Capt McNaught gave me a commemorative 'QE2's final world cruise' plaque which some of you might also have seen.
If he has resigned, it will be a loss as the overwhelming consensus was that he was most popular of QE2's then Masters and I certainly enjoyed his company that memorable morning.
-
I've heard great things about Captain McNaught. When QE2 visited Belfast two years ago people said he was nice and very friendly. I always thought that when QE2 would retire he would leave Cunard. I wish him well and good luck for the future.
-
Nice write up of a personal experience with captain mcnaught lachlan.
It may be worth posting the comments on the wear and tear on the super structure as I'm sure people would be I interested - especially as it came from such a reliable source!
jdl
-
Sad to hear that news, from what I've heard about him he seems a real gentlemen. I wish him all the best for the future. This is clearly Cunards loss.
-
If Captain Ian McNaught has resigned it's a sad day for Cunard.
I was looking forward to meeting him again on a future Cunard cruise. However, I was fortunate to sail with him on the QE2's voyage to Dubai. He was a most hospitable and professional Captain. I will never forget the time he and his wife made for us on that last voyage, we were honoured to be the last group of Cabin Cavalcaders to visit the Captain's quarters.
Having sailed with Cunard for 25 years, of all the Captains I met, Ian was my favourite. I'm sure many other 'Cunarders' would agree.
-
If this is accurate, Cunard will not be Cunard without Captain McNaught.
I had the great fortune to meet him on several occasions. Firstly in 1995 when he, as First Officer gave me a tour of QE2's Bridge, on behalf of Commodore John Burton-Hall. Later meetings including catching up aboard QE2 during her farewell World Cruise. His love for QE2 was evident every time we met.
I hope he will enjoy a great future whatever he decides to do.
-
IF this is true, Im sorry to hear it. I do wonder if those at Carnival realise what a loss he will be, Perhaps they just didnt like the constant references to QE2.
Imagine if he came aboard here, the stories he could tell..... Then again maybe hes one of the many many guests that visit.
-
This news is reminiscent to me of how I felt when I saw the news that Cunard sold QE2; hoping it was a joke or unconfirmed rumor, but gut wrenching to find out it was quite true. I thank Captain McNaught for 17 magical days onboard QE2 with him at the command.
-
Maybe he got a new, better job - like Captain of QE2 ???!!
(I assume, by the way, that like the newly opened and renamed "Burgh Khalifa", QE2 will now be renamed for one of Dubai's other big creditors ... the MV King Abdullah etc.?)
-
Well, according to Cunard Captain McNaught has completed his services with Cunard and is switching over to Seabourn.
Ron
-
Reuniting with Pam Conover! Now there was a fantastic CEO for Cunard!
-
Once, when crossing the Atlantic, I asked him what a Rhum Line course was (he had mentioned in his noon address that we were switching to one from a Great Circle course). Not only did he take the time to answer the question, he took me to an actual chart and spent over an hour explaining the difference in detail. Wonderful!
-
Maybe i can understand his reasons..............,maybe its the some reasons like i had when leaving the QE2. ( of course we had different positions lol ).

forgive the quick off topic question but who is the non uniformed person on the bridge wing - security ??
Back on topic if he has gone to seaborne then that's great in one way as they smaller more intimate ships allowing more contact with officers and crew. But, bad news as meeting him moves up a notch financially!!!

"forgive the quick off topic question but who is the non uniformed person on the bridge wing - security ??"
Could be Marty from Randall and Hopkirk-something definately seems to be going on in another world now
Good Luck to Capt McNaught
By the Way Happy New Year everybody
-
The non-uniformed person was the pilot, we were just leaving Quebec.
-
What am I going to do??, only just booked a voyage, sorry (cruise) on wet nose vikki, I know what you're all thinking, but really , I needed a rail to lean on, & Twynkle says it's not that bad if you just look out to sea at all times, so went for it. However, was going to take me favourite QE2 book with me in the hope I could get him to sign it, in return I've bought a couple of I heart QE2 badges which I was going to quietly put in his pocket, Seabourne are well out of range , so guess I'll just have to wear them with pride one on each lapel, how about I heart Mc Naught badges, a true gent!! I wish him all the best, another link to dear old QE2 gone though.....
-
So technically, isn't Captain McNaught still with Carnival? Isn't the Yachts of Seabourn part of the vast Carnival empire?
-
Indeed it is. And their offices are still at 6100 Blue Lagoon Dr Ste: 400, in Miami. This is where Cunard operated alongside Seabourn from '97 to '04 with Larry Pimentel and later Pam Conover at the helm. I joined Cunard just as Larry was leaving in 01. Nice to know the offices are still being used.
Ron
-
Can we invite him as guest of honour at our forum meet in April 2010?
-
I am still finding the verb "resigns" a bit puzzling in this context. I wonder what it means...
Ian McNaught was such a memorable captain of QE2. His love of QE2 shone out, and at the same time he also had all those human qualities which made it easy and delightful to interact with him. When we checked in for our last cruise, I asked the lady at the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal which captain we would have. "The young one, the good-looking one", she winked. I am sure that many of us felt this was so true!
I hope he will find a new home at sea for himself on another ship, and wish him well for his future career!
-
This is not really surprising news...I think Capt Macnaught has been very frustrated with Cunard for a very long time.
Now QE2 has gone....Cunard aren't really interested in anything gone by whether passengers ,crew, ship ,or whatever....so now the senior crew are leaving Cunard too???
Says it all really........the glory days of true Ocean Liner Cruising is well and truly over...its a mass market package holiday.
He was always charming, polite and great fun.. we have many wonderful memories of him on board,.and he had a great sense of pride in his wonderful QE2..the true pinnacle of his career...he appeared to be very fair and stood no nonsense....so I think very respected too...
Ian I wish you well.....and hope our.paths cross again one day.....
-
As far as I can now tell he did resign, from Cunard, and this site was the one that broke the news, by some margin. Thank you to my source.
Cunard were forced to admit this on Facebook when 'MiamiCunarder' Ron asked them to confirm the news :-
Can Cunard confirm Captain Ian McNaught's resignation from the Line?
Yes. Captain McNaught is completing his service with Cunard and will begin service with our sister-company Seabourn at the end of this month.
We thank him for his many years of dedicated service to Cunard Line and wish him all the best.
I think its a shame that Cunard didn't take the lead with this, and post a nice tribute to him, rather than it having to come out by the back door.
-
Will he be Master of the new classy Seabourn ship?? looooooks real nice!
-
So this news actually is not as dire as perhaps originally thought. Perhaps a break from Cunard for awhile until they assign someone else to manage the line is not a bad idea for him. Perhaps he just needs a break, but I suspect that even on Seabourn, people will ask him about his favorite ship. But then again, by that time, all memories of QE2 will have been systematically removed. :'(
-

I was just about to post that an 'invite' (read marketing invitation for the inaugural cruise) for Seabourn Sojourn that launches in June 2010 landed on my doorstep this morning.
For my money this is where Captain Mcnaught is going, a few months supervising the last months of the handover and then a brand new ship to command - It's certainly a very tempeting offer and one he was denied by Cunard when they gave away the new QE to someone else.
I'm not convinced with Sojourn's looks though, she isn't that bad, but, the twin rear funnel stacks and what looks like a viewing area infront of the bridge just don't look right in my book.
jdl
-
The twin funnels are a design feature of all of Seabourn's "Yachts." I don't mind the futuristic look of their fleet. In fact, they really do look like very large private yachts. At least they still look like ships and not floating apartment blocks.
While keep getting Seabourn mail due to sailing on Cunard, I definitely do not fit their demographic and do not see myself sailing with them.
-
Agree that the Seabourn ships appear to be lovely, inside and out, but I don't think I can afford them!
-
I didn't realise that the twin funnel is a signature piece of design, but how you mention it it does ring a bell with sea dream 1 and 2 (no idea what they are christened now!)
the viewing balcony in front of the bridge still looks odd and possibly a little dangerous unless that is they offer open bridge access a la Hebridean cruises. But it is an artists impression and we all know how the fnished article can look a lot different!

Maybe this will be Captain McNaught's new ship?

What will he be doing in the mean time? His transfer is effective at the end of this month.

Opinion from The Mirror
by John Honeywell
'Cunard aficionados will be disappointed to learn that Captain Ian McNaught (above left), the last master of the QE2, is leaving the fleet to join Yachts of Seabourn.
Word leaked out this week on website The QE2 Story, and although Cunard have confirmed it is true, the nearest they have come to making an no official statement is a response on their Facebook fan page,....

Just saw Captain McNaught on "QE2: The Final Voyage" - a wonderful but sad little walk down memory lane!

I've got that on DVD which I taped. What channel was it on?

From 'The Yachts of Seabourn' page on Facebook!
Hello .... Captain McNaught is going to be joining Seabourn Spirit at the end of January. We're looking forward to welcoming you aboard soon!

Just to let you know that the material about the Solent grounding is now here, gathered together :

Looks like what really happened will remain a mystery forever... quite amazing really!
-
Well, bringing this subject back to QE2, I secretly hoping that the planets will realign properly and one day we will get our favorite Captain McNaught back at the helm of Cunard's Flagship QM2, a "proper liner" as hew would say. Seems like all the Cunard officers are dropping like flies. ???
-
Perhaps Michael can shed some light here; but it seems that Captain McNaught has moved on from Cunard in that, rather than being seconded to Seabourn, he resigned from Cunard and was employed anew by Seabourn.
If that's the case, perhaps we won't see him back on a Queen. QE2 was his Cunarder, now that she's gone, Seabourn is probably closer to the way of life aboard QE2 than QM2 or QV.
Plus, with Pam Conover at the helm of Seabourn, Captain McNaught is in good company!
-
Think there would be a blue moon in the sky for Capt McNaught to return to Cunard.....
~Yes he is in very good company on board Seabourn....they are lovely little ships very well run and so rather traditional...should suit Capt McNaught very well.
I think cunard are heading the same way with Captains and Officers interacting...notice how there are no private cocktail parties any more...eventually I think there will be no hosted tables (save on the wine) and eventually captains cocktails will be reduced to gathering in the atrium with the captain doing a short speech from deck above and thats the last you will see of him....I think its obvious they don't want their senior personnel getting too friendly with passengers. pity....as they were the true Cunard PR.....
-
I think slowly and sadly cunard is losing its unique "britishness" and becoming too international. I too think Capt Mcnaught should have been made Commodore of the line.
-

Perhaps as was with QE2 its the end of an era in that sense, No cruise on QE2 was complete without one of those little printed invites and you had no idea where you were going. Who hasnt for a moment, just applied a tad more make up before joining the line up to shake hands with the Captain and then to enter into the Queens Room, who dared refuse the glass of fizzy plonk and then wondered in to see old friends from previous trips or your table guests and then before you know it the lights are raised and your making your way to dinner to start another glamorous evening. The hosted tables and private parties were always great PR and usually a talking point long after you docked
Call me old fashioned but this was part of Cunard and what Cunard did and always should do. and they did it very well. I have no idea how they do it on the new one ones, l dont really care to be honest, But l always knew my Captain had Cunard in his veins. Now with this Princess lark is it to be first name terms and a hi five when you greet him, and who would have thought a Princess Commodore on a Cunard Queen. I do gather embarkation afternoon isnt on QM2? if that is the case lm appalled. Ok so there is that Kings Court but l saw that one day and it was a feeding frenzy for the mad
I for one liked Cunard the way it was, Not how its going, they do l believe call it progress , but at what price
( l still cant get over the downloadable bagtags ::))
-
Totally agree Cunard Queen....
All too soon the ships will be computer controlled from a port and the passengers can pay for a 'virtual' meeting with the Captain ! LOL
We may laugh now.....but remember they used to laugh at the thought of a man on the moon????
Your comment re the hi 5 greeting etc....obviously you haven't experienced the way NCL do it....
oh my God.....you would NOT like it..... and my experience was a few years ago never to be repeated......
YES embarkation as early as poss on QM2...according to John Duffy that wonderful long time Hotel Manager for Cunard just shakes his head and said its what todays Clientelle want......they CANNOT possibly wait till afternoon to get on board., hence the reason you cannot be privately escorted to your cabin as crew are on lunch duty at the Zoo feeding trough in kings court.
'you can call me old fashioned too....to be honest I prefer it....( I must be a boring old git as well LOL)
An I agree with the comment above Capt McNaught should have been Commodore..( TO be honest I think he had thought that too...he had earned it).....so much better than the one elected....far too 'smarmy 'in my book, ( i bet he has a lot of mirrors in his cabin!) a behaviour not cared for in a dignified and distinguished Cunard Captain.
-
Ian McNaught's father was a marine engineer. Ian's son is at present in the second year of his deck officer cadetship - I met him on QE2 in July 08. Once the salt gets in your veins it seems to pass down through the family generations.
My father was gunnery officer on destroyers doing the Russian convoys, I'm a marine engineer, my youngest son was one of Ian McNaught's junior officers on QE2. As I say, it gets in the blood!

Commodore Warner is actually from P&O originally, and he treated us with the utmost professionalism and courtesy, and wrote a wonderful afterword for the QM2 book. We had a number of QE2-style parties on QM2 in 2009 thanks to Commodore Warner.
-
Is this Captain McNaught's ship?
It appears that he wasn't at the helm for this transit.

(Somewhere that Queen Elizabeth won't be able to squeeze through,either...!)
-
Ditto Chris's comments on Commodore Warner. Bernie's a charming guy with a great sense of humor and very entertaining. I was on his first QM2 cruise when he relieved Ron Warwick after the Ft. Lauderdale pilot crunched the pod leaving port--overall an awkward scene. Was fortunate enough to have dinner at his table one evening and enjoyed it thoroughly. He clearly understands the difference between Princesss and Cunard and takes to his new role. Amazing memory for names and faces, although he did keep Ray Rouse close by in those early days.
-
Does anyone have nice images of Captain McNaught on QE2 (not on QV) that we can use to illustrate the 'Ask the Captain' topic?
Thanks.

Good news!
A very fitting appointment for a very professional man.

I am so pleased with this appointment for Captain McNaught. He was my favourite captain on the QE2 as he was such an approachable person. Congratulations to the Captain.
-
Not just a wonderful mariner but a brilliant communicator, something which will serve him well in his new role.
A well deserved appointment in which I wish him every success.

This is from Captain Greybeard's Facebook Page:
QE2's Captain McNaught to take charge of UK's lighthouses
by Captain Greybeard on Wednesday, 26 January 2011 at 23:47
Congratulations to Captain Ian McNaught, former master of Queen Elizabeth 2, who has found a new berth as Deputy Master of Trinity House, which looks after the lighthouses around the British coast.
After 40 years at sea, more than 20 of them with Cunard, he finally gets a home posting.
Captain McNaught, 56, a Wearsider from Washington, was in command of QE2 when it sailed off to retirement in Dubai in November 2009. He hosted a lunch for Prince Philip - who is Master of Trinity House - and made an emotional speech before the ship left Southampton for the last time.
He was also on the bridge when I crossed to New York aboard the liner earlier that year.
Last year he joined the Seabourn fleet - like Cunard, part of the Carnival comglomerate - where he was reunited with a former boss, Pamela Conover.
Trinity House is responsible for all the navigational aids in British waters - as well as lighthouses they include beacons, buoys and modern satellite technology
Captain McNaught said: "Having spent nearly 40 years at sea, my selection as Deputy Master of Trinity House is the pinnacle of a successful career as a Master Mariner. It provides me with an opportunity to lead the principal maritime fraternity and institution in the country for the benefit of Maritime Britain, the shipping industry, and all the seagoing community. There is, I believe, no greater opportunity than this to use all my maritime experience and expertise gathered during my career at sea."
In the position of Executive Chairman of Trinity House, Captain McNaught will lead the General Lighthouse Authority responsible for the safe navigation of some of the world's busiest shipping lanes and pioneers of research in to new technologies to improve the effectiveness and efficiencies of the aids to navigation it provides. As Deputy Master of the Corporation of Trinity House he will be responsible for the activities of the UK's largest endowed maritime charity.
Captain McNaught will join Trinity House in September, on the retirement of Rear Admiral Sir Jeremy de Halpert.
He'll have a new boss as Master of the Corporation by then, as well. The Princess Royal will be taking over the job from her father, who has held the position since 1969.

What was his original role when he joined them earlier this year?

IIRC he was initially sworn in as an Elder Brother back in January '11 prior to taking up this new post.

Photo competition on the Captains of the QE2, here :

This photo competition looks more like a 'best picture of Ian McNaught' competition ;)
Clearly some have never sailed with other Captains.... However each have their own unique points

Capt McNaught appeared on Masterchef - The Professionals last night on BBC TV. The chefs were making a lunch at Trinity House for himself, his wife and other celebrated Mariners. He was mentioned as captain of QE2 in the narrative.
Always he thought he was a good speaker!!!

Likewise, it was a pleasant surprise to see Ian and his wife when watching MasterChef last week with a friend (I don't normally watch MasterChef either). QE2 is long gone from these shores but isn't forgotten - a legend amongst ships - which is nice to see in programs such as this.

I do like a bit of Masterchef, especially the Professionals, and when they said they were at Trinity House, I immediately said "Ian McNaught will be hosting" and sure he was. Glad he and Sue both looked so well, and I hope they enjoyed their meal.
Link to the programme below, and a couple of sneaky screen-grabs.

Ian McNaught's father was a marine engineer, but Ian went deck-side in his chosen career, as did his son, who was with us on QE2 in July 2008. The son was starting his sea-going career in 2009, so should be well qualified by now and in a position of responsibility on a ship somewhere.

Yes - navigator on P&O's Britannia. Screenshot ( I couldn't get the post itself to link properly for some reason; it's post 157 in this one: https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php?topic=6357.0 ) below from the thread about the jigsaw from my painting:

Thanks Peter.
Strange how so many young people at sea today have a sea-faring parent who was able to introduce them to the job in some way or another. Of the 20 NZ youngsters in my son's cadet intake, the only 3 who graduated all had their fathers at sea!
My lad is currently navigator/safety officer on 'Aurora', but is going to 'Ventura' around mid-year. He started out on 'Grand Princess' as a cadet, so 'Ventura' wont be a size shock to him.
He came and joined me in the Aussie offshore for 6 years, then Carnival UK grabbed him back when the oil prices dropped and the jobs there disappeared.
Cheers,
Skilly

Strange as it may seem, i doubt that there were any letters of congratulations on the award of the CVO to Captain McNaught, coming out of Carnival UK HQ in S'ton. He was not popular with the Hierarchy of CUK being a very traditional Cunard Captain who, not only knew his mind, but spoke it as well. In the end, their loss was Seabourn and ultimately Trinity House's gain. I'd love to be 'fly on the wall' at the first time he meets senior CUK managers/directors wearing his CVO, any 'greeting' fron them will certainly be through clenched teeth and forced smiles!!
An excellent Staff Captain and Captain to work for and with who I am proud to have served with.
