Background:
Willie Farmer was born in New Brighton, near Liverpool in 1916.  His father was a Chief Engineer with White Star Line, his grandfather was in the Royal Navy and his grandmother was born at sea, so you could say he came from a seafaring family. 

Joined QE2 in 1971 and became Chief Engineer of the ship in 1977
Retired October 1979
Date of Death: 2001?

Navy Career
At the age of 16 Willie went to sea as an apprentice pilot.  He then studied engineering for four years, before returning to sea as a junior engineer at the age of twenty.

In 1938 he joined the Georgic as a junior engineer.  He worked on many Cunard ships before joining the Queen Elizabeth for her maiden voyage from Clydebank.  He was on the Queen Elizabeth for her secret dash across the Atlantic in 1940. 

He was first appointed as Chief Engineer on Saxonia, then on Queen Elizabeth, until her last voyage as a Cunard ship to the Port Everglades.  John Grant was his Depute on Queen Elizabeth in the 1960's).

Willie Farmer was also Chief Engineer on  Carmania and  Caronia, from her Maiden Voyage until she was sold. 

Willie Farmer liked making marquetry pictures and was a keen artists painting historical navy scenes.
