Very very sad news.

The only consolation is that this will provide employment to a considerable number of people who need it, even though these are dangerous jobs. And that all that constitutes this beautiful ship will be recycled as best as possible.

May her spirit rest in peace...

This sad and emotional news is so heartbreaking that I can't even read the posts about her beaching.  :'(
May the memories of her last forever.

Very true! I thought I can handle it as I handled it when good old Norway was beached but obviously it's a difference if you were on a ship just for couple of hours for sightseeing or if you had a great time for two weeks as I had it on Vistafjord.

On one hand I'm very, very sad, on the other I'm so angry on nowadays culture where everything must be bigger, better, more modern and spectacular. The old values like a ship as Vistafjord is only interesting to a bunch of people as we are here in that forum. That's a real shame and for me, I'm completely through with the cruise business in general and will put my focus only on companies who run older ships like Phoenix etc.
So just some emotional thoughts, don't take me too serious!  ::)

Sorry for not yet posted the promised pictures, too busy the last days, but I will manage it on Easter.

Anyone fed up with the cruise industry might wish do as i do

Stay in nice hotels and go on great historical (steam) ships for a few hours each day

Lake Lucerne, lake Geneva, Lake Zurich, Lakes Brienz and Thun are good places to start !

Oh, and of course, come to the Clyde for our very own Waverley !

Also just found this in the ship breaking Group:

Any idea when breaking up will commence? This truly is tragic.

Sadly no, been really busy the past week, and the information that I do gather from various source is really nothing, apart from the two pictures, I haven't come across anytime at all sadly.

I got information that she will not be pulled closer to the beach before end of this month...at current position start of breaking will not be possible. A slow and undignified death...  :-\

Indeed, Alang has claimed yet another Liner, I guess they thought they hadn't destroyed enough beautiful ships already... Norway and Saga Ruby both ousted by the cruise industry, hopefully Ruby puts up a fight during scrapping as Canberra did!

Hi Folks,

Not the cheeriest post but I noticed these posted on a Shipbreaking Facebook page this morning (https://www.facebook.com/groups/shipbreaking/)
It might just be the general atmosphere of Alang but there looks to be a small amount of exhaust from her funnel - I wonder if they are still running her generators to provide on board power? Generally they will strip her fixtures and fittings first so they can be sold off before actually cutting any steel - the first sign is when they cut the tip of her bow away - appears to be a ceremonial thing at ship breakers. As already stated she is too far out to start cutting anyway.

Re: Putting up a fight - the Pakistani ship breakers who bought ss Canberra must've regretted it - her deep draught meant she beached a lot further out therefore taking a lot longer to break and cost a lot more too! That was once she had beached at full ahead with bagpipe music playing on her PA system!!

To me this old girl doesn't look ready for this fate - but unfortunately its sealed. Hopefully Peter Knego or someone similar will get some of her fixtures and fittings so the memories live on.....
