QE2 in Bremerhaven 1986
« on: Mar 21, 2013, 03:20 PM »
As some of you may know, there was a lot of dissention , amongst the Officers, regarding conditions during the refit. The Engineers actually went on strike until it was sorted out. They delayed sailing for about 3 hours.
Here is a new letter I came up with. Not PC but this was 1986!

Some old faces I recognise in the Gang of Thugs photo, Rod: the indomitable Bob Cobain, left front (never seen him with beard before - must say it suited him), Willie Grey, right front, you of course. The guy next to you I remember but his name escapes me, along with the guy behind Bob.

Guy behind Bob is Steve "The Thug" Thackery, next to me is Glyn Owen ...of course my future wife is in there as well. The guy at the very back was there from the small ships...extremely nice guy,,,cannot remember his name!

Just came across this video, don't know if it has been posted before. I believe the video shows QE2 leaving the shipyard after the work is done, although some locals might be able to determine this more precise.

Quite haunting music. If she was leaving Bremerhaven (or might she have been doing sea trials again ) she was sailing into the history books and leaving Southampton April 29th 1987 she was sailing at full speed onto the front pages of the newspapers. The rest is history
 ;)

I was on board, and I can remember it like it was yesterday.

Quite emotional, seeing the brand new funnel smoking away for the first time...

Rob, were you already on board at the beginning of this video, so to speak, or did you embark towards the end, when we see her berthed at dusk, with a lot of people standing around?
