We Want Our Queen Back! If Not, We'll Build Again!

« on: June 28, 2009, 07:10:34 AM »

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if Nakheel could install a few little webcams on the QE2, or even one on the harbour somewhere looking at her so we can all keep an eye on her progress??

We would be very greatful to Nakheel if they would be kind enough to do this for all her enthusiasts around the world.....  Smiley  Wink Smiley

Thankyou in advance to Nakheel if your reading this.

Hello NairB,

That's a great idea!  QE2 would really appreciate it too!

As well as her own webcam on the Bridge, she got lots of CCTV cameras on board already - could they be used as online webcams?

Can you hear us Nakheel...?!

Dear Nakheel,

I would like to ask your great company if it is possible to have a wee webcam "live" of the QE2 to keep her Worldwide enthusiasts happy. Maybe you (Nakheel) could have a small advertisement banner running underneath these "live" pictures, promoting your companies latest business ideas also.... Wink

Many thanks Nakheel,

Hello to the people looking after QE2 in Dubai!

Like Nair B's request above, Please - when you have finished the painting, could a priority be to get QE2's webcam up and running, Live?

That would be a very good thing indeed!

Thank you!

LOL Rob.....yes please....fly me over and I will install loads of webcams on her with remote "pan & tilt" capability.... Wink

Wouldn't cost much at all for such cams and a broadband link......would it Nakheel....teeheehee.

Also remember the little "Nakheel" advertisement messages with each webcam picture.... Wink

If Nakheel needs any help with this, I would be most grateful to oblige... Smiley

+ 1.  Re-instating the webcam would be fantastic.

Oh, if any passionate QE2 avandisio volunteers are needed to go aboard and accompany her to Capetown, not as paying passengers of course, please advise, I'll be there.

Erik, genuinely pleased with recent developments.  All things QE2 are certainly improving of late.

Hope so, I'm really lookign forward to watching as much of the voyage as I can, I didn't make the most of it when the ship was in service, just looked now and then, occasionaly tuned in espcielaly to watch arrival or departure from a particularly interesting location, not gonna make the same mistake this time round!  Cool

What site would the webcqm be posted to? Certainly NOT Carnicunard. I discovered bridge webcams only on qe2's last voyage, so would love to see her at sea again.

Not wanting to put a dampner on anything but getting anything done in Dubai at any speed is nigh on impossible!  Add that to the fact that it's Ramadan right now and even less of anything gets done, then I'll be amazed if it's fixed up any time soon!!

It's taken me over 2 years to realise that Dubai is impossibly slow and if they utter the word 'Insh'allah' then it'll never happen!!!

Go on Nakheel prove me wrong!!!!  Tongue Cool

Going slightly off topic here for this thread but not sure how else to post this question to the fellow member:

Mauretania1907, would you happen to be the same young chap who has made Virtual Sailor composites of QE2, QM2 and Norway, to name a few? If it is you, I don't remember your name at the moment but I do remember the same profile name being used for the marine architect of those brilliant Virtual Sailor ocean liners.

Also, this being my first actual post to the group after being a longtime lurker from the get-go, cheers to all from another long time QE2 aficionado. Smiley

I had to lay money on it, I'd say that QE2's webcam is still physically there. I installed that camera around 2004, just fwd of the S Band Radar display, on the bridge. It was originally just used as the Fwd View Camera on the ships internal TV system, providing a feed to the TV Studio (3dk Aft Port Side) for distribution round the ship. From there, a feed was taken to the Computer Server Room and then sent via C-Band Satellite off the ship for the webcam.

I dunno if Nakheel would have maintained the C-Band Sat Link, or if Cunard would have taken the TV Studio Equipment/ PC's.

Fascinating Kenny, thanks!

The image was always very good quality (as seen at the bottom of the main forum's contents page!).  Far better than the one on QM2.  Not high resolution, obviously, but clear with good colour and good exposure.  I wonder if images were stored on the server... in higher resolution than what we saw... that would be nice!

Great to get some information straight from the "horse's mouth"!

If my memories are correct, we used to have the bridge view in our cabins before 2004 as well -- can you remember whether there was an older system going when you installed the 2004 version?

Hey Guys,

We had a fwd view camera for the internal tv system for many years before I joined QE2 (2002), but it used to be mounted in its own housing above the bridge.

The camera kept on failing up there, just because the housing was so exposed, and a bit knackered. It was becoming a very political issue on the ship, esp on the north altantic runs, cause the people with inboard cabins relied on the camera to see whether it was daytime, or to check the weather. As we couldnt get onto the bridge roof while the ship was at sea, I decided to move the camera down to within the bridge. The navigators had a bit of fun with it, and would often angle it into the bridge when they were bored. It all worked out really well, the camera being there, so I made the install permanent.

I didnt like the QM2's fwd view camera either. They mounted it too far from the bridge window, at a stupid angle with a large lans - basically couldnt see the horizon which defied the point of the camera. Still, QM2 wasnt exactly a Cunard ship - the company didnt ask for, nor want our opinion on anything!

Later

It was certainly there in 1987... how long before that was it there?

The view from the bridge featured in the cabin TV system was installed in 1987 - when every cabin was given a TV set. This was the first time all cabins had a TV.

I loved it when I was aboard in 1988 - when I was in my cabin I knew what to expect as the seas were extremely rough - I knew when to hold!  Unfortunately, I did not know about it early enough and was tossed out of my bed the first night (which I did not expect at all!).  I wish there were live cams back then - people at home would not have believed how high the seas were!

There was a forward looking bow cam in QE2 in 1989, cause I remember turning the t.v. on to see what she was looking at. Answer to previous post, no I'm not the young chap you are after, I could not do virtual ships, but would like a look at his site one day. Guess I got the Maury 1907 tag here, she is my favorite historical ship, QE2 is my favourite "Live" ship.

Hello

The physical cam on the bridge is still there, however it will be upgraded as part of the recommissioning process.

The sat comms components will also be recommissioned to allow images to be published for everyone to see.

That's great. Will be looking forward to watching her live once more.

Mauretania1907, here's a snapshot I took of the virtual QE2, made by the fellow I thought was you. Smiley
You can see her from any direction or angle you please, including the bridge and steam her into various ports. The program it runs off of is called Virtual Sailor. Although purchasing the program online incurs a fairly reasonable price, the ships are free as they are in most instances created by the game's users.
