It would be great if we could collect here our memories and the information we have about the various refits which QE2 underwent in the course of her life. Love that photo of you in the "naked" interior Louis. Amazing to see. Amazing headheight too, in among the 'scaffolding'.
Also interesting to see, in both pictures, no major asbestos warnings etc... although i suspect the "black bin bags" on the queens room bulkhead might be related to this issue...

It may have been in the changed public areas Rosie, but I suspect not everywhere, and I know for a fact it was still present on all accomodation decks.

Asbestos has been discussed in a separate thread on the forum. All 5 main passenger decks have all their original asbestos lurking behind the original panels everywhere, but it doesn't matter, at all, unless disturbed... |

It didnt look like it. It was a webcam image, so of the top of the bow, with alot of black, looked like a fire type mark. Matt |

It was gold, to go with the navy-blue hull... I think they were going for the 'Royal Yacht' look... |

It was to match the go faster stripe which was red (top), gold (middle), blue (bottom). However people thought that the gold between the red boot topping and the blue hull looked dirty so it was quickly repainted white.

Louis, great photos. Interesting, the first photo clearly shows the added vanes on the propeller shaft, just before the actual prop. These must have been added when the ship was converted to diesel electric and the props were changed to the variable pitch units. The vanes were not on the original hull. Or, they were added shortly after the conversion to address vibration issues. Perhaps Flagship can confirm this.

Info regarding the Grimm vanes are from post No.25 onwards here!
Rosie, those aren't the vanes that Ken is referring to - although there might be a connection. The Grim Vane Wheels were long gone by the time Louis' photo was taken. Ken is talking about the 'ribs' that are the first thing on the prop shaft after it exits the ship. It would indeed be interesting to note what these were for - and my best guess is that they were to agitate or control the water for the Grim Vanes or propellors. |

The original 2008 refit was booked from 18 April to 5 May but this was altered after the ship had been sold and became a wetdock in Southampton lasting from 18 to 27 April. The huge benefit of this occurred on 22 April when we had the magnificent sight of the three Queens in Southampton together.
Plus an additional cruise was squeezed in which helped with demand in her last season.

Do you mean La Rochelle Rosie? Her calls there for 2008 were cancelled due to potential strike action and she called instead in Le Verdon. I was a bit annoyed at this as I booked one of the trips calling at La Rochelle as I wanted to go there - one of my memories from doing French at school was that it seemed everyone in France lived there so I wanted to see what the place was like! If you do mean La Rochelle I will try and get a final date for you.

You beat me to it Chris - same question to Michael! Also, I saw her every day during her wet dock & for the majority of time Upper deck, aft of the Yacht Club, was fully cloaked. I wanted to ask what was being done there? - I assume work on her teak deck/caulking which requires reasonable protection from the elements to complete. It just seemed odd to be doing that type of work so close to her retirement unless it was urgent, or in order to prevent or resolve other issues. There were also plenty of lifeboats away which I assume were being serviced or tested/certified - which would need to happen regardless of what was happening to QE2 in the near future. I know that the teak decks urgently needed to be refastened in this area. There were huge areas that has delaminated and were very "spongy." Either the fasteners had corroded and failed or the teak adhesive failed. Either way, the humps in the deck were a hazzard. I noticed this in several areas during the January 2008 Winter Crossing. If you were not careful, I could easily see someone losing their balance on the humps in the deck, especially if the ship was moving a bit. All was corrected by the time I set foot on her again in October.
