Does anyone know what would have happened to the onboard ships logs and paper documents? Would Cunard have kept these or passed them over to Nahkeel/Vships???

Hi!

About her logs etc up till the 'signing off' in Dubai - I wondered the same too!
Although it doesn't answer your question exactly (sorry!), have you seen this?

Thinking - all her logs, whilst she was under Cunard ownership and command, surely will still belong to Cunard Line?
Amongst other things, mighn't all documents relating to 11.11 have been needed and used for the investigation into the 'happening' at The Brambles?
(albeit - this was a different voyage)

The log books have all gone to John Moores in Liverpool for Archiving and safe keeping

The official log books are the property of the MCA so have been returned to the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen in the office in Cardiff

I'm glad to hear that too. Is it likely that any ex-crew would be able to see them do you think?

All log books need to be kept by the company for a certain amount of time in case they ever need to be looked at again. This is rare, but always a possibility.
So considering this, the QE2's logbooks were always going to be returned to Cunard for storage.
Regarding 11/11, you can guarentee the MCA and MAIB looked very carefully at the bridge logbook after this incident, especially at the page for this date.

True about the MCA / MAIB looking at the log books for the Brambles 'incident' also worth noting that she was fitted with a VDR (Voyage Data Recorder) (in 2003 I think it was) which recorded all conversations on the bridge and also all inputs and outputs from the bridge equipment.

Would quite like to hear the recordings of that morning!

Hi, holynougat
About recording 'everything' -
I wonder then, was this sort of 'Black Box' recording procedure implemented originally
because of potential incidents, or perhaps because of a specific one?
Maybe QE2 wasn't the first passenger ship to carry this specific technological equipment?
I wonder too - did it ever get turned off?

And on from there - there's sure to be some interesting listening to be experienced;
the possibilities would seem to be endless...
However - it could well be that these recordings are maintained for specific purposes, and otherwise will remain properly confidential.
By the way - was everyone who visited the bridge made aware of the practice?!
Good for training purposes too, I guess

All passenger ships now have VDR recording equipment.

The usual practice is that it is on a 24 hour loop, so that if a 24 hour period passes without incident it starts 'recording over' itself.

If an incident occurs, the chief electrician would come to the bridge, remove the hard drives and secure them so that they could not be tampered with.

It is usual to make pilots aware of VDR recording equipment, but not usually bridge visitors!

I can think of a few incidents where the VDS was 'pulled' while I was on the QE2, and my usual response was to wonder exactly what / who I had been nattering about in the previous 24 hours!
